Humble Beginnings of Welcare Student Care Centre
The mention of Little India, people will always remember the heavy traffic on the road as well as the human traffic throughout the year. Little India is known for its lively atmosphere and amidst these environment a bus stop after the famous "Zhu Jiao Wet Market", lies a special place that caters to the academic needs and developmental growth of each individual child, to maximise their potential in order to become a good citizen with good moral values. The place that I am describing about, is non other than Welcare Student Care Centre. They can be easily spotted, because of three major reasons, namely 1) Creative Design 2) Colour of the centre and 3) Laughter of the children at the centre.
The creator who created this place together with the assistance of 4 other people is none other than the president Mr Gerad Michael. He had come about with the idea of setting up this organization as he really had the passion to teach and saw a need in rendering his services to the lower income family children. As the children under the guidance of the president, had proven results of success, soon through the recommendation of these children parents, the class size had increased from 4 students to 20 students. Due to the overwhelming response from the lower income families, the president together with his supporters had gone about to search for a suitable place to cater to the needs of these under priviledge children who mostly came from within the vicinity of the Ang Mo Kio Estate.
In the year 2002, Welcare Student Care Centre was officially setup, it was registered under the acts of Charities of Societies, which is also coming under the category of Volunteer Welfare Organization, as the managements main objective was to cater to the needs of the under priviledged school going children (7 years old to 12 years old) in the society academically and their developmental growth as well, at times their family in monetary assistance as well.
The services Welcare renders are 1) Remediation/Enrichment Programmes according to school syllabus 2) Guidance in daily school homework 3) Counselling and 4) Preparation For Tests/Examinations or Spellings for the week. As majority of the students are coming straight from school, thus we also throw in meals for the students before the tution for the day starts and ends.
During the school's termly break, for the period of March, June & September, lessons will still be ongoing as it is still a school term. Whereas in October, November and December, being a non-school term, thus educational field trips will be organized for the children and other fun indoor activities as well.
Our charges for the tution fees are set according to the parent's salary. And the Central Development Community Singapore (CDC) will also assist us in funding partial of the Before & After School Care Services fees as well.
The aim of the management is to expand its services and continuously seek excellence in the services rendered with the support from the general public, in order to reach out to these under priviledged families.
